First Grade

"Capital Christian School has been one of the biggest blessings to my kids and I since moving to Oregon. The small class sizes and extra one on one we receive has helped my kids transition during a hard season of their life. They are loved on. encouraged and guided to not only academic success, but God's Word on a daily basis. As a parent, there is not much more you could ask for."

- Elizabeth Bate

Bible

Character building principles are taught through Bible stories. Each lesson includes discussion of how these stories relate to our lives today. Scripture memorization and participation in chapel deepens the students' understanding of Biblical principles.

Phonics/Spelling

Our phonics and spelling curriculum go hand in hand. The phonics and spelling rules are consistently implemented throughout the daily worksheets and week evaluations. This gives students consistent practice applying each skill.

Art

First grade art includes coloring, cutting, painting, paper tearing, and gluing; all focusing on the development of fine motor skills. Art lessons help support topics covered across the curriculum.

Reading

Reading is one of the fundamental building-blocks students cultivate in first grade. It is at the core of instruction each day. Students progress throughout the year in their reading abilities. Instruction in phonics, spelling, and sight words help the students improve.

Social Studies

Social Studies instruction includes learning about the symbols and freedoms of the United States. Important people in the history of the United States are covered. There is also introduction and instruction of countries all over the world.

Field Trips

Field trips are an opportunity for students to experience learning outside of the classroom.

Mathematics

Becoming problem soivers in our society is a skill our students must master. First grade is where students begin to master addition, subtraction, time telling, money, & measurement skills. Mathematical concepts are integrated into Science, Social Studies, Writing, and reading as a regular part of instruction.

Science

In science students experience some of their first science projects, as well as participation in the Science Fair. Learning about being fearfully and wonderfully made. Forces and machines, animals, insects, plants, and seasons are also covered with experiences to reinforce these concepts as they are taught.
