Second Grade

Capital Christian provides a safe environment and superior education for my children. The teachers and faculty care not only about my child's academics but also my child's heart and character. They assist me in raising our children to love in Christ. I am so thankful for Capital Christian and its place in my children's life."

Bible

Throughout the year we look at God's promises to us, primarily through the study of Exodus, as well as various key scriptures and stories that enhance God's faithfulness to His people. Our scripture memory goes along with this theme as we memorize Ephesians 6:11-20, Psalm

119:9-16, and 1 John 4:7-14.

Phonics/Spelling

Our phonics and spelling curriculum go hand in hand. The phonics and spelling rules are consistently implemented throughout the daily worksheets and week evaluations. This gives students consistent practice applying each skill.

Art

Students are exposed to a variety of different mediums in art for the first time in a structured environment. Projects include water color, oil pastels and many others. Art is also often integrated into core curriculum.

Chapel

Each student at Capital Christian School is given many opportunities to grow spiritually through daily Bible classes as well as chapel services, which are held twice a month.

Reading/Phonics/Spelling

In 2nd grade, we work hard at becoming fluent in oral reading. Through the use of guided instruction, reading groups, and individual assessment, reading is a core subject that is taught systematically through the use of phonics, sight words and vocabulary. Each spelling list corresponds to a particular phonics rule or rules that we have covered.

History/Social Studies

Through the year we will talk about the many people who helped build and shape "Our America" into what it is today. We look at patriotism and what it means to love and respect our country and flag. Geography is also integrated through studies of featured states and countries.

Language

Our language program focuses very heavily on sentence structure, using correct punctuation and capitalization and writing. Additional emphasis is given to alphabetical order, prefixes, suffixes, homonyms, opposites and abbreviations.

Field Trips

Field trips are an opportunity for students to experience learning outside of the classroom.

Mathematics

A variety of written and manipulative activities are used to educate students in this area. A main focus is memorizing addition and subtraction facts and beginning to memorize multiplication and division facts. We learn to tell time to the minute, cover basic metric and standard measurements, how to count and manipulate money and begin geometry.

Science

A combination of field trips, class discussion, reading, written activities, experiments, and take home projects are used to reinforce the different areas of science that we discuss through the year. Some of the fun things 2nd grade has done in the past are: models of vertebrate and invertebrate animals, experimenting with stored energy, and taste testing all different parts that make up plants.

Handwriting

Students review proper manuscript (printing) form, and in the second semester begin learning cursive. By the end of second grade, your student should be able to neatly write capital and lowercase cursive letters. This will be accomplished through practice in class and various written homework assignments.

Capital Christian School's second grade provides students

with essential foundations while instilling a love of learning.
